Koala to Lynx Almost Flawless

On the day that Lucid Lynx was released I threw caution to the wind and upgraded my main computer. It was running Karmic Koala at the time and I thought that the upgrade should be painless, even though conventional wisdom dictates to wait a bit after a new release. But I have heard so many good things about Lucid Lynx, and a fresh install of the beta version on an old computer I had at work was very impressive.

I am happy to report that the upgrade went very well, I am pleased. The computer runs faster under Lucid Lynx than it did under Karmic Koala. This is a bonus as Karmic gave me an increase in speed as well.

Except one thing. My printer was not recognised at all. To make matters worse the printing utility did not work either. Perhaps I should say except for three things because my wife was waiting anxiously for me to print something for her. To make a long story short, the usual great aid that the Linux community provides had the answer. I just had to re-install CUPS.

So If you are having this problem too, just go to Synaptic Package Manager, find the package named Cups and click on it to re-install.

While you are at it, if you have not done so already, try this on the command line:  sudo apt-get install cups-pdf   that will install the driver that permits you to print to a PDF file. It is  great for saving (and then printing later if you must) a webpage like this one.

Despite being very happy with Lucid Lynx, I am going to miss the Koala Bear that I had on my desktop.

[...] Koala to Lynx Almost Flawless [...]

I've now upgraded to lynx on five machines, and four were smooth as you like. The only problematic one was the work machine which dual boots into 64-bit Windows XP (apparently, as I can't say I ever actually use it that way). The upgrade process provides precious little advice at the point of reconfiguring grub, and I made a (newbie) grub error - selecting the /boot partition instead of the MBR of the hard disk for the install location. Result? A machine which would not boot. There's plenty of documentation out in the 'verse for repairing such a mess, and I'm pleased to say the problem is well solved now. But other users of dual-boot Ubuntu might be advised to gen up on grub before deploying the dist-upgrade.
